This collection is composed primarily of correspondence and business forms relating to John Gilmore's activities as a newspaper publisher, journalist, state legislator, and a confident of state governors.

Martin came to Kansas in 1857. In 1858 he began his journalistic career by purchasing the Squatter Soverign, a proslavery paper published in Atchison.
